SUNNINGDALE Bowls Club ladies have beaten Three Miles Cross 59-40 (8-2 on points) in a Thames Valley League match.

The highest scoring home rink was that of Janet Spencer, Pam Kiddell and skip Pat Isted.

The ladies also travelled to Bracknell and lost 61-42 (8-2). The winning rink for Sunningdale included Spencer, Rita Hardin and skip Marjorie Walklett.

In the Kennet League, Sunningdale played at home against Wokingham B and lost 80-73 (10-4). The highest scoring rink was that of Steve Hawthorne, Kieron Farry, Don Allston and skip Derek Cooper.

Farnborough Gate were the visitors for a friendly match and, after the green again received praise, Sunningdale won the match 98-56. Spencer, Hardin and skip Ray Callaghan took top rink honours.

Great Hollands

Great Hollands beat Caversham 47-38 (7-3) in the Thames Valley League where Rita Littleford skipped the highest winning rink (19-18).

In the Kennet League, Great Hollands suffered a heavy 87-59 (14-0) defeat to Caversham. George Harris came closest to winning a rink in a 16-15 defeat.

The KLX team played Royal Household and won 55-46 (8-2). Harris skipped the highest winning rink (21-12) and Ray Furnell also won, 18-13.

Wokingham

Wokingham had progressed well in the prestigious National Top Club competition but came up against Tilehurst away and lost in four of the five disciplines.

Clive Tarran defeated Adrian Collins 21-16 in the Four Wood Singles but that was to be the only win on the night for Wokingham.

Tilehurst won the remaining disciplines – Two Wood Singles, Pairs and Triples – to proceed in the competition.

Wokingham took on the University of Reading in the County Double Fours which involves one rink playing at home and the other away, and the combined scores determines who goes forward to the next round.

Wokingham won the match 36-35 in what turned out to be a worrying evening.

In the away match, Tarran, John Scowen, Paul Mellhuish and Martin O’Connor lost 18-17 and had to wait for news that the home game had been won 19-17 for the overall win. Wokingham were represented at home by Neil Jones, Alan Symondson, Adrian Chipper and Andy Franklin.

Wokingham and Sunningdale played for the Manley Cup, which is now in its 30th year, and awarded to the team that finishes highest over two legs.

Wayne Manley donated the cup while a member at Sunningdale and made a guest appearance to captain their team. He now plays at Twyford.

This year Wokingham won the cup 175-147. The second leg held this week at Sunningdale was won by the visitors 89-85. The top triple was skipped by Gerry Deeves along with Pat Cleary and Colin Musto.

Rinks skipped by Jim Rudd (18-12), John Buttigieg (18-15) and Bob Thompson (21-13) were also victorious in the competition.

Wokingham returned to winning ways in the Kennet League with a 103-54 home win against Maidenhead Thicket. The top rink was skipped by Thompson and contained Trevor Gilmour, O’Connor and Ron Swan.

In Division Two, Wokingham beat Sunningdale 80-73.
