BERKSHIRE Under 20s moved into the quarter finals of the National U20 Competition with a 19-13 victory at Devon on Sunday.

The home side took the lead in this Pool Four encounter when fly-half Dean Squire scored an impressive try following an attack from a scrum. Billy Pinkus converted to put his side 7-0 up.

However, Berkshire levelled straight away with wing Conor Corrigan going over in the right corner. Jordan Souter, one of seven Reading University students in the visitors’ squad, converted the try.

Centre Souter then went on to punish Devon for indiscipline, putting over three penalties to give his side a 16-7 half-time lead.

Berkshire had a try disallowed straight after the break, but after that Devon came to life as they bid to secure a comeback victory.

Pinkus cut the gap to six points with a penalty on 46 minutes, but Souter responded with one of his own to push the Berkshire lead to 19-10.

Pinkus then missed a penalty before Devon, looking dangerous on the counter-attack, wasted three good chances to score a try.

The home team did get within one score on 66 minutes when Pinkus put over another penalty.

Berkshire missed one of their own on 72 minutes but held on for a deserved victory, following on from their previous 19-7 success against Cornwall.

Berkshire complete their pool fixtures at Redingensians RFC against the other unbeaten side, Gloucestershire, on Sunday, March 13.

The visitors have so far beaten Devon 30-15 and Cornwall 36-14 in their two games to date.
