BRACKNELL RFC’s first trip to Guernsey ended in disappointment as they crashed to a 27-8 defeat in National Three London Three & South East.

The home side began stronger at Footes Lane and took an early advantage when tight-head prop Layton Batiste crashed over from close range, although Owen Thomas missed the conversion.

With the contest settling down, the two sides then exchanged penalties to give Guernsey an 8-3 lead.

The islanders extended their lead courtesy of the outstanding Glen Waters – the scourge of Bracknell in the season’s earlier encounter – and went into the break 13-3 to the good.

Guernsey continued to have the better of proceedings in the second half and they bagged their third try of the afternoon when wing Dave Davison crossed the whitewash, Thomas converting to make the score 20-3.

The bonus point was secured for the home side when second row Nick Merrien rumbled over, with Thomas again adding the extras.

Bracknell kept fighting till the end and earned a consolation score through wing Ian Burch (pictured), although it proved far too little too late as they slipped to an 11th defeat in 17 games to remain 10th in the table.

Bracknell host the team directly above them, Colchester, at Lily Hill Park this Saturday (2.15pm).
