FLY-HALF Liam Hemming produced an outstanding performance to help Bracknell RFC return to winning ways with a 34-10 success at home to Gravesend in National Three London & South East, writes Richard Ashton.

It was Gravesend who enjoyed the opening phases of the game, but they were unable to take advantage against an impressive Bracknell defence.

And it was the home side who opened the scoring – from a quick tap penalty by Jack Conway, the ball found its way to Ian Burch to allow him to score under the Gravesend posts. The conversion was kicked by Hemming to make it 7-0.

Two further penalties by Hemming and one by Jacob Berthelson for Gravesend took the score to 13-3 with 20 minutes gone, as both sides struggled to maintain their discipline.

Stand-off Hemming then took charge of the game, weaving his way through the Gravesend defensive line for Bracknell’s second score of the day, which he again converted to stretch the lead to 20-3.

With Robin Foulet sin-binned for the visitors, Hemming again broke through for another converted score to put the Lily Hill men in complete command at the interval, 27-3 in front.

Bracknell secured the try bonus-point on 48 minutes, a catch and drive from a line-out by the forwards leading to a Harry Challenor score.

Hemming maintained his immaculate form from the kicking tee to take his tally to an impressive 24 points, although the conversion would be the last score of the day for the home side.

Former academy player Liam Goodison made his debut off the bench for Bracknell and Gravesend were again reduced to 14 men when Tom Shields was yellow-carded for handling in the ruck in the 62nd minute.

However, they scored a consolation try with the last play of the game – the visitors managing to shift the ball away from the tackle area before full back Gary Gray dotted down in the corner. Berthelson converted before the referee blew for full time.

Bracknell host second-bottom Westcliff on Saturday (2.15pm).
