Bracknell produced the goods when it really mattered to chalk up a seventh successive home victory at Lily Hill Park on Saturday and climb above Brixham in the table.

And with a trip to basement boys Chard to come this weekend, Rory Greenslade-Jones’ side now look favourites to secure third spot.

While Brixham were higher up in the table before kick-off, they were bidding to become only the second team to win at Bracknell this season.

The visitors started on the front foot, though it was Bracknell who took the lead with a George Owen penalty.

Brixham replied with a penalty of their own, but Bracknell then grabbed a crucial try and an early advantage.

It came when Ian Burch timed his run perfectly to intercept a pass on the half-way line and race through unopposed before dotting down under the posts.

Owens’ added the extras and the home side led 10–3 with only 10 minutes of the match played.

Brixham, though, continued to dominate possession and this was soon reflected on the scoreboard thanks to a brace of tries in a five-minute spell.

They hauled themselves back into the game when a textbook catch-and-drive from a lineout saw three Brixham players rumble over the line for a try. But the conversion was missed to leave Bracknell 10–8 in front.

However, the home side then found themselves behind when Brixham crossed the line yet again this time through their winger though, once again, the conversion attempt drifted wide.

At that stage it was looking a little worrying for the home side, who were starved of possession for the second quarter going into the break.

Yet Brixham also failed to register another point before half time after missing with two penalty attempts and led 13–10 at the turnaround.

A week earlier Bracknell were also up against it at Bournemouth until a rousing half-time talk by head coach Greenslade-Jones inspired his troops in the second period and they went on to claim an important 13–10 win.

The same thing essentially happened again on Saturday as Bracknell bossed the second half and nullified Brixham’s threat.

A penalty by Owen soon after the restart levelled the scores at 13–13.

And Owen followed that up when he crossed the whitewash for a vital try. He missed the conversion, but Bracknell led 18–13.

The momentum was well and truly with the the home side now and they extended their lead further with another try.

This time it was engineered by the forwards who drove Brixham back over their own line before Stuart Silvestre got the touchdown.

This time, Owen made no mistake with the conversion to put Bracknell 25–13 up.

They rarely looked like conceding another point until the last move of the match when a missed tackle allowed Brixham to score and snatch a bonus point.

Nevertheless, Bracknell fully deserved their victory as they climbed up to third in the table for the first time this season.

Greenslade-Jones will now take his side to Chard this Saturday for Bracknell’s first ever trip to play the Somerset side (2pm ko).

Chard are bottom of the table with just one win to their name this season, and Bracknell will be firm favourites to return to Berkshire with a bonus-point victory.
