Their medal hunt took them to The Scottish Open in Edinburgh where cadets Kiera Bateman (Under 48kg) and Olivia Spellman (U63kg) both took a big step up in their judo careers.

The aim was for the pair to gain valuable experience, but they put on a superb display as both claimed a bronze medal in the junior section for Under 21s.

A confident Bateman then took part in the senior section and secured gold by default as the other competitors withdrew.

Spellman also picked up her second medal of the tournament with another bronze in the senior section.

More club success was to follow when they sent a large contingent to a tournament in High Wycombe which acts as a qualifier for the upcoming National Schools Championships.

Pinewood returned with four gold medals, one silver and one bronze after another impressive showing.

Tobias Chapman, Oliver Young, Dan Franklin and Charlie Howell all returned with a gold, while Ettienne Keeler won silver and Ruben Lord a bronze.

Pinewood were back on the road again on Sunday to compete in The Worthing Orange Belt and Under Open.

The standard was extremely high with plenty of national-ranked competitors in attendance.

Noah Jones, fighting at his new weight of U34kg, lost only one close battle to take the silver medal.

Phoebe Deacon showed great fight to take bronze at U40kg where she was dwarfed by many of her opponents.

And just 24 hours after Keeler had grabbed silver at High Wycombe, he went one better in Worthing by winning gold thanks to some impressive big throws and intelligent, tactical approach.

Another gold soon followed for Pinewood’s Caitlyn Clark, who appeared much smaller than many of her opponents at U57kg.

Pinewood sensei Mark Fricker beamed: “It was her best performance in competition to date and I’m pleased to see that her hard work and dedication is paying her back.” Oliver Young recovered from an early mistake in his first fight to win bronze at U38kg.

Terri Gough had a tournament to remember after she breezed through her U12 section to land a gold medal.

Gough then tried her luck in the U16 section where a stunning performance saw her win silver.

There were further silver medals to follow for Lottie Stickland at U28kg and Bella Holeman at U36kg.

Fricker added: “These events are a critical part of the young judoka’s improvement.

“Beyond the medal count, some very useful experience was gained by all of the competitors and parents who gave up their time in pursuit of their judo dream.”
