JASON Roberts is not expecting Reading FC to make 'knee-jerk' signings in January.

Royals boss Brian McDermott is poised to bolster his squad, though in last week's Reading Chronicle he revealed there was little money to spend.

However, McDermott is scouring the market in the hope of finding a bargain who could kick-start Reading's season.

Last January the signing of Roberts from Blackburn Rovers proved a masterstroke as Royals went on an incredible charge to win the Championship title.

Now, Reading are being heavily linked with moves for Nottingham Forest keeper Lee Camp plus Arsenal's out-of-favour Andrey Arshavin. And veteran striker Roberts insists any New Year additions must be chosen carefully.

"Reading have always conducted good business," he explained. "If we bring someone in it won't be a knee-jerk reaction, it will be with a long-term view rather than doing a job for us for a couple of months.

"I'm sure the club is looking at every option. All clubs want to improve and Reading are the same."

He added: "I guess every team will look to strengthen, that's what the window is there for.

"It's tough to find players to come in and hit the ground running but I'm sure the manager will be looking at his options.

"If you can bring in better players than what you've got then you should. Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City would say the same. Whether we can achieve that is another thing.

"Within our group there is always space for good players. If a new player came in it wouldn't be an issue."

Roberts, though, remains convinced there is more to come from the present Reading team.

"I also know what we've got in that dressing room," he said. "I come in every day and I'm inspired by these guys.

"I said when I joined Reading there is a very special feeling here. It's a special club and a great dressing room.

"We want to be successful and I think we're a step away from that. But if we can put everything together, I think you are looking at a really good team here.

"We need to show that on the pitch and we'll work and keep believing in ourselves because that's what will get us though this."
