ASCOT United beat Binfield away from home for the first time in over three years on Saturday.

In one of only two games to take place in the Hellenic Premier Division due to heavy rain, the Yellamen edged past the Moles 1-0 thanks to Leon Yarnie's goal.

Credit must go to the groundsman at Hill Farm Lane for getting the match on in the first place following a deluge of rain in the run-up to the weekend.

The pitch coped admirably with the sodden ground and there was not a puddle to be seen. However, the blustery conditions and driving rain still played its part in the game.

Ascot United manager Jeff Lamb told the News: "Overall it was quite a frustrating game but Binfield is always a hard place to come and get three points so I'm chuffed to pieces." The win has certainly been a long time coming - April 2010 in fact - a day Lamb remembers well: "The last time we won here, Paul [McGrotty] and I were centre backs and we won 4-0." The home side started with more purpose while Ascot struggled to get into the game for the majority of the first half.

Seb Bowerman was his usual tricky self and his direct running caused Ascot plenty of problems at the back.

Half chances fell to James Rusby and Ben Sturgess but it was Ascot who carved out the clearest opportunity in the 32nd minute after a slight tweak in formation from Lamb.

Daryl McClean was allowed to skip through the Binfield defence but his cross just evaded Jermaine Roache.

A minute later, the same player had a shot blocked by Matt Watson following Yarnie's initial effort.

Again, Binfield started the second half better but it was the Yellamen who had the clearest sight at goal when Yarnie's lay-off to Rob Saunders saw a 25-yard effort crash off the crossbar 10 minutes in.

Yarnie finally broke the deadlock on 59 minutes when he reacted quickest to Justin Clayton's header from another dangerous Saunders free kick.

However, Binfield thought they had equalised when Tom Hopper swivelled and fired home but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the box.

The Moles continued to press forward in search of the equaliser and were certainly knocking on the door in the last 10 minutes with wave after wave of attack.

But some desperate Ascot defending kept them out and they held on for another three points, which moves them up to second in the table and just four points off Ardley United, who have a game in hand.

Lamb said: "Binfield created chances and in the last five minutes we were hanging on.

"We were getting deeper and deeper and they were coming at us.

"Perhaps they might feel unfortunate not to have scored." The Moles will be looking to bounce back on Boxing Day when they travel to Larges Lane to take on rivals Bracknell Town.

Ascot meanwhile host Hoyport at the Racecourse ground and will be looking to capitalise on any dropped points during the Christmas period.

"The Christmas period is going to be important because teams are going to lose players over the festive period and I think if we can keep ours, it will help us because teams will lose points," Lamb said.

"We want to win the league and we've got as good a chance as anyone else."
