The Yellamen take on Premier Division rivals Ardley United in the Hellenic League’s Bluefin Sports Cup final at Didcot Town’s Loop Meadow on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm ko).

It is a repeat of last year’s final which Ascot won 2-1 following goals from Daryl McLean and Rob Saunders.

“The commitment level of the players has been excellent,” said Lamb after his side had completed their league fixtures with a 3-2 win at Reading Town last Thursday.

“Everybody in the squad has played their part and, like last season, it would be nice to finish off with a cup win.” Lamb added: “It is good to be going head-to-head with them (Ardley) again. They will be looking for revenge and I’m sure it is going to be another good game.” Ascot suffered a few knocks during their win at Reading Town and Lamb will await fitness checks before naming his team for the final. But, as was shown last Thursday, his squad has strength in depth: “Everybody has played their part this season,” added Lamb, who rested a few players against Reading Town. “It was nice and rewarding to give other squad members some pitch time. The team has played a number of games in a short space of time and have done well.” Ascot had reeled off nine successive wins before being held to a goalless draw by Binfield on Monday of last week, so the win at Scours Lane extended their unbeaten sequence to 10 games.

Their goals came from Jon Bennett, Joe Yeates and Ian Brooks, all in the second half after they had trailed 1-0 at half-time.

“Binfield spoilt our winning run, so it was nice to finish off the (league) season with another win,” said Lamb, who gave himself some pitch time against Reading.

Having finished third in the league and been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the FA Vase, the Yellamen don’t want to be known as ‘Nearly men’ this season, and that will give them another incentive to lift the cup on Monday.

Ascot will start as favourites, having completed a league double over Ardley, winning 2-1 at home and 3-0 away.

The Oxfordshire side have had a disappointing season. Having finished runners-up to Wantage in 2013-14, they were tipped as strong challengers for the title and for much of this campaign they were hot on the heels of the leaders.

But they lost their first four games after Christmas, endured another poor run in April and eventually finished eighth in the table, 16 points behind Ascot. Ardley are managed by Kevin Brock, the former Oxford United, Newcastle and QPR player.
