The Moles were in a rich vein of form after picking up 10 victories from 11 matches, conceding a mere five goals during that unbeaten run which included 7-0 and 5-0 wins over Cheltenham Saracens and Reading Town respectively.

But Roger Herridge’s men appear to have lost all their momentum and were beaten by mid-table Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday in their latest setback.

The Moles got off to a nightmare start in Gloucestershire after gifting their hosts a first-minute lead then finding themselves 3-0 down inside 16 minutes.

Moles did fight back with two goals of their own, but the home side held on to secure all three points.

Herridge would have sent his players out with the message to keep things tight in the opening exchanges.

But they shot themselves in the foot less than 60 seconds into the match.

Moles took far too many touches in defence and were robbed of possession by the home side.

While Matt Watson appeared to have saved his side by blocking Sam Blackie’s shot, David Woodfield was on hand to tuck in the rebound.

Before Binfield could recover Lilywhites doubled their lead when a long ball caught their defence flat-footed, and Ollie Pitt capitalised by racing through and rifling a shot past Watson into the corner of the net.

It was a disastrous start for the Moles - and worse soon followed when Pitt controlled a throw-in, swivelled in the box and hammered a shot into the far corner to put the hosts 3-0 up in the 16th minute.

But the visitors pulled one back immediately when Ian Davies met Josh Howell’s cross and Jemel Johnson was on hand to finish after a fine save from Steve Sparrow.

The Moles dominated from there and it was a question of whether Brimscombe could hold on.

Davies threatened again moments later when his shot shaved the Brimscombe post, and the Moles striker did bring his side to within one goal just past the half-hour mark.

A Josh Howell corner was flicked on by Carl Withers and Davies was on hand to side-foot home from close range.

Davies then fired narrowly wide as Moles pushed for a third, but Watson also had to make a fine save to tip over a goalbound free-kick as the visitors went in 3-2 down at the break.

Binfield were forced to replace Callum Whitty with Jamie Connor, who worked hard in the second period.

But while most of the second half was played in Brimscombe territory, Moles could not find an elusive equaliser.

Sparrow made important saves to deny Davies and Aaron Rowland while Johnson headed agonizingly over when he looked certain to score.

But Brimscombe survived to claim their sixth win in seven matches and leave Moles empty handed.

There was some good news for the Moles as 17-year-old Tom Adams made his first-team debut after progressing through the club’s fantastic youth system.

A busy week for Moles was set to continues tonight when they were due to face North Leigh United in the Flying Press Floodlity Cup Final at Kidlington FC.

Binfield then return to league action next Monday night when they host rivals Ascot United at Hill Farm Lane (7.45pm ko).
