“We have a run of home games coming up and got to try to take advantage of them,” he said after Saturday’s 3-1 win over neighbours Bracknell in a thoroughly entertaining local derby at Hill Farm Lane.

Watched by a crowd of 182, The Moles scored all their three goals in the first half which they totally dominated and could easily have doubled their tally.

They opened the scoring after nine minutes when a sweeping move was finished off by Josh Howell, whose low strike from the edge of the penalty area left keeper Garry Aulsberry rooted to the spot.

After having two penalty appeals turned down, Binfield doubled their lead in the 35th minute. From Seb Bowerman’s left-wing corner, David Woozley headed against the woodwork before Davies finished it off though it still needed the referee’s assistant to confirm the ball had crossed the line.

Binfield, whose team work was in a different class to their visitors, added a third goal five minutes before half-time when Bowerman waltzed through a static Robins defence to slot past Aulsberry.

Bracknell, changing their formation and making two substitutions at half-time, came more into the game and took one of the several scoring opportunities that came their way in the second half. Skipper Woozley, who had an otherwise outstanding game, could only head the ball into the path of Shane Cooper-Clark and the league’s leading scorer made no mistake in the 72nd minute.

The Robins were unlucky not to have scored again, but a lot more chances continued to be created at the other end.

Davies missed an open goal from close range among several opportunities that fell his way, while Woozley also had an effort cleared off the line.

Herridge, below, said: “Another day Ian would have got five as he had five great chances. He had one of those days which happens to all strikers.” He added: “As far as the second half I could start to get critical, as maybe we lost our shape a little bit, got a little sloppy and made a mistake which gave them (Bracknell) their goal which made the rest of the game a bit interesting. But at the end of the day it was about getting the three points and having the local bragging rights.” The win leaves Binfield sixth in the table, but Herridge is looking to close the gap further on the leading group.

“We have certainly got to be looking for a top four finish,” he told the Bracknell News.

“We have a run of home games coming up and got to try to take advantage of them.

“It is just a pity we had lost those three games to Kidlington, Thame and Flackwell before Christmas when we lost to Had we taken five or six points then we would still have been in it (title race).

“But it wasn’t to be. We made mistakes and had players sent off which cost us dear. But I am reasonably pleased with the way things are going.

“We have got to make sure we win as many games as we can between now and the end of the season.” Herridge added: “We’ve also got the (Hellenic) Floodlit Cup semi-final against Rayners Lane and the quarter-final of the Reading Senior Cup to look forward to, so hopefully we can finish the season with a bit of silverware as well as a top four finish.” The tie away to Division 1 East side Rayners Lane is next Tuesday, while this Saturday Binfield receive a visit from Milton United, currently 13th in the table.

Their home fixture against Ascot has been re-arranged for Monday, April 13. It was scheduled for last Monday, but Binfield agreed to switch it in order to give their east Berkshire rivals more time to prepare for their FA Vase quarter-final tie away to St Austell this Saturday. Meanwhile, Binfield FC chairman Bob Bacon also had some good news for supporters last Saturday.

He revealed that the club are now in a position to push along their plans to refurbish the clubhouse and car park.

“The club has been able to get a grant from the Binfield Parish Council; in fact, slightly more than we asked for,” he said.

“On top of that, I took a call from a borough councillor on Tuesday and we’ve been given even more funding, so all things being equal we can get things moving.

“We are very grateful for the support and encouragement from our parish council.” GET THE NEWS EACH WEEK FOR THE BEST BINFIELD FC COVERAGE
