But they were made to work hard by Holyport and it wasn’t until extra-time when the Yellaman secured victory in this third-round tie.

Both sides had chances to open the scoring in the first half and it wasn’t until just before the hour mark when the deadlock was broken.

Cup holders Ascot turned defence into attack with a sweeping move. Jon Bennett latched onto the ball on the half-way line and made ground before cutting the ball back from the left wing for Lee Boon to expertly volley home from 12 yards.

United then made three substitutions in a short space of time, with Rob Saunders, Bennett and Leon Yarnie being replaced by James Burrell, Ian Brooks and Damian Markman.

But they were unable to apply the brake on Holyport and the visitors equalised with six minutes of normal time remaining when a cross from Jamie Essex was turned home at the far post by Andy Vine.

Ascot were given a couple of scares by Adam Paget early in extra-time, but another swift counter-attack saw them regain the lead with Boon and Markman creating the chance for Brooks to find the net.

Holyport were reduced to 10 men when Jack Harding committed his second yellow-card offence and the Yellamen, being watched by a St Austell representative, then put the game beyond any doubt with a third goal when Steven Rogers, under pressure from Markman, turned the ball into his own net.

The Yellamen now turn their attention to their FA Vase quarter-final at AFC St Austell on Saturday (3pm).
