They crushed Chalfont Wasps 10-0, a result which deservedly earned them an honourable mention by Jeff Stelling at the end of Sky Sports Gillette Soccer Saturday. With their temporary home at Henley again unavailable due to the pitch being unfit, this Hellenic League Division One East game was switched back to their old ground in Lowther Road.

And playing on a surface they know so well appeared to inspire Dan Bateman’s side.

Eight different players put their name on the scoresheet as Wokingham notched their biggest victory of the day in Step Six football.

The win completed a highly successful week for the Sumas, as they had booked their place in the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup final against Reading YMCA and also knocked Hellenic League leaders Highmoor Ibis out of the Reading Senior Cup.

So they went into this game against bottom-of-the-table Chalfont Wasps riding the crest of a wave and took the lead in the opening minute when Luke Scope, far right. fired home.

But Wasps provided some stiff opposition in the opening 15 minutes and even missed a good chance to equalise before Wokingham doubled their advantage with 27 minutes gone.

Nick Bateman was brought down and Jack Gibbs confidently fired home the penalty.

Gibbs then turned provider with his corner being superbly headed home by skipper Chris Yeatman three minutes before half-time to give the Sumas a 3-0 half-time lead.

Three minutes into the second half Scope made it 4-0, collecting the ball near the halfway line and racing through the Wasps defence before firing into the bottom corner.

From then on, it was one-way traffic. Wokingham’s task was being made easier when Chalfont, having used their subs, lost their keeper through injury, which he suffered when trying to stop substitute Darren Thorne scoring his side’s fifth.

Now playing against 10 men, the goals continued to flow as Wokingham demonstrated their outstanding offensive capabilities.

Sam Bateman found the net in the 75th and 83rd minutes, Elliot Rushforth on 81 minutes and then Jake Butler volleyed home from outside the area to take the total into double figures.

Another injury saw the visitors finish the game with nine men.

With their goal average given a big boost, Sumas now lie fourth in the table, four points behind Easington Sports with three games in hand.

They face title rivals Old Woodstock Town at home on Saturday with the game scheduled to take place at Henley FC.
