The fixture was the first at The Sumas’ new temporary home at Henley Town, and an encouraging crowd of 62 braved the cold conditions to watch an entertaining contest.

Joint managers Dan Bateman and Matt Eggleston made a number of changes to the side which had earned an impressive 3-0 win at Rayners Lane the previous Saturday, recalling Luke Scope and Dan Collier to the starting line-up and adding Nick Bateman and Harley to the bench after they had been unavailable for the trip to London. The game started with Penn very much on the front foot as both sides adapted well to a difficult pitch.

Both teams had chances throughout the opening half hour but the best one fell to Chris Hurst, who really should have put the visitors a goal up after 28 minutes, but he blasted over when shooting from 10 yards.

With Tylers dominant, it was left to the hosts’ defenders - Will Day James Charlton, and Chris Newlove - to keep them at bay, and they did an outstanding job meaning goalkeeper Sean Woodward did not have many saves to make. However Wokingham really struggled to find their normally excellent passing game and on the stroke of half time Penn took the lead.

Following some decent pressure, the visitors sent over a corner which Dan Collier - on his 21st birthday - inadvertently headed into his own net. Harley and Bateman were introduced at the start of the second half and this seemed to bring the Sumas to life.

However it wasn’t until the 75th minute that the game was level when a corner came in and Charlton set up a header for Harley to make it 1-1.

Three minutes later a brilliant flowing move involving most of the Wokingham side resulted in Mark O’Connell setting up Jake Butler, but his left-footed effort was cleared off the line, a situation repeated with five minutes to go when Harley’s effort was stopped by a defender.

Although both sides continued to produce a vibrant clash, neither team could snatch a winner and The Sumas had to settle for a point. Wokingham & Emmbrook are now three points behind leaders Brackley Town Development, albeit with three games in hand.

The Sumas are due to visit Wantage Town Reserves in the BBFA County Intermediate Cup on Thursday (7.45pm), with the winners visiting Long Wittenham Athletic in the quarter-finals on Saturday (3pm). If Wokingham lose against Wantage, they will host Brackley in the league (3pm).
