It took less than 30 seconds for Bennett to test the visiting goalkeeper, Steve Sparrow anxiously scrambling across his goal line to tip an ultimately tame effort wide. Brimscombe’s response saw Ashley Brown’s header flash narrowly wide before Andy Dean’s last gasp tackle brought Ollie Pitt’s marauding run through a sea of yellow and blue to an end.

In an entertaining opening 15 minutes, Matt Cooper’s excellent curling volley for Ascot was plucked out of the air by the diving Sparrow, before Jesse Wilson headed a Thrupp corner over.

The visitors weathered a short spell of pressure before Pitt and Ben Deakin’s interchange after 25 minutes allowed the latter a sight of goal, but he could only shoot straight at Chris Grace.

Rob Saunders saw a direct free-kick sail over for Ascot, but it was Brimscombe who could havetaken a half time lead with two chances falling to them inside two minutes. Firstly, Brown tumbled under Alex Rodrigues’ tackle in the box before Deakin shot straight at Grace from close range. Both sides might have scored inside one minute of the restart - Bennett once again forced a save from Sparrow inside 30 seconds whilst Deakin’s lob in the immediate counter-attack beat Grace but was cleared off the line by Rodrigues.

However, the first goal arrived after 54 minutes, courtesy of Bennett’s (pictured right) build-up play.

Breaking quickly from defence, he muscled his way through the visiting rearguard and drilled a low shot from a tight angle which Sparrow saved, only for Lee Boon to bury the rebound.

A relatively quiet spell was then re-ignited by Boon’s 40 yard run into the penalty area, which ended when Dave Hancock drew a fine save from Sparrow on the overlap, before Joe Grant missed a golden chance to seal the win.
