A second-half strike from Adam Dickens was enough to give Roger Herridge’s side a slender victory against the Hellenic Division One East leaders.

There was a first start for new Moles signing Marcos Ushero-Lumb, who joined the club from Maidenhead last week.

The 17-year-old put in an assured performance at right-back, contributing to the clean sheet as Binfield bounced back from their first defeat in seven games the previous week.

It was the home side who started the strongest, going close to breaking the deadlock twice in the opening 10 minutes as they sensed an upset was potentially on the cards.

Matt Johnson lobbed the ball narrowly over the bar with Dan Weait beaten, while Ryan Knight fired into the side netting when placed in a good position just yards from goal.

After a frantic start by the hosts, Binfield settled down and began to exert their Hellenic League Premier Division superiority on the game.

Dickens went close from a Seb Bowerman cross, while Callum Whitty twice got on the end of corners but was denied by Piotr Jacucha in the home goal.

Jemel Johnson had a deflected shot saved, before he was stopped with the ball at his feet by Jacucha as he ran in one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

It remained level at the break but Binfield were on top and continued the second-half in the same vein.

Bowerman went on a solo run and saw his drilled effort tipped away, before Binfield forced several corners in a row as they threatened to take the lead.

And Herridge’s side finally went ahead in the 65th minute, when Dickens finished off a flowing Moles move.

Johnson advanced down the right flank and delivered a fizzing cross that Ian Davies helped on to Dickens, who controlled it perfectly and stabbed the ball home from eight yards.

It was a deserved lead for Binfield and they nearly doubled their advantage moments later with an audacious effort from substitute Josh Howell.

The midfielder had only just come on the pitch when he chested down a mishit clearance and volleyed towards goal from 40 yards, with the ball narrowly sailing over the bar to deny him a goal of the season contender.

The hosts pushed forward late on looking for a goal, with Matt Hammond forcing Weait into a diving save as his shot looked destined for the top right-hand corner.

Knight broke into the penalty area on the left in added time, but he could only direct his shot towards Weait from a tight angle, and the referee blew for time shortly after.

Binfield were due to return to league action at Milton United last night (Tuesday), before welcoming Thame United to Hill Farm Lane on Saturday (3pm) as they look to continue their fine form under Herridge.
