The Yellamen breezed into the fourth round of the Hellenic Floodlit Cup following their 6-0 demolition of Shortwood United Reserves at the Racecourse on Tuesday night.

Shortwood made the 90 mile trip from Gloucestershire, but it proved to be a wasted journey for the visitors.

However, not everything went Ascot’s way either for much of the first period.

Leon Yarnie saw a goal disallowed for offside then James Burrell was forced off with an ankle injury on the half-hour mark.

But Yellamen finally broke the deadlock with two goals in two minutes just before the break.

First, Yarnie converted a Lee Boon cross for the opener then a Rob Saunders corner was headed in by Ian Brooks for a 2-0 lead.

Ascot kept their foot on the gas and scored a third a minute into the second-half when another Saunders corner was turned in by substitute Lee Grant.

There was no letting up for the Yellamen as Boon slotted home from a rebound after Matt Jones’ initial effort had been saved.

Brooks made it 5-0 following a superb run from substitute Jermaine Roache. Roache then notched Ascot’s sixth in time added on after Jones had set him up.

In another boost for Ascot, talented 16-year-old Klaus Reeves came off the bench to make his senior debut, and almost scored with a shot that was well saved.

The win followed Ascot advancing to the third round of the FA Vase on Saturday with a 1-0 win at Horndean.

A solo strike from Daryl McLean was enough to give a depleted Ascot side victory, with the defensive effort –marshalled by Jeff Lamb in a rare appearance – standing strong to ensure the win.

The Yellamen reached the quarter final of the competition two years ago, coming agonisingly close to a Wembley appearance.

But supporters of the Yellamen were left to dream again as Lamb’s men edged a close encounter, with McLean firing home in the 60th minute after good work by Yarnie.

Ascot have been drawn against Newport from the Isle of Wight in the next round of the FA Vase, whereas Abingdon United are their opponents in the next round of the Hellenic Floodlit Cup. Ironically, Ascot take on Abingdon United in the next round of the cup. Ironically, Ascot also face a trip to Abingdon United this Saturday in the Hellenic Premier (3pm ko) on top of an away fixture at Highworth Town next Tuesday night (7.45pm ko).
