The Sumas face Finchampstead in the final after goals from George Dance and Jake Butler helped them defeat Hellenic Premier Division side Bracknell Town in a tight semi-final at Larges Lane last week.

Finchampstead booked their spot in the final by overcoming Henley Town on penalties to set up a local derby clash between two sides at opposite ends of the Hellenic Division One East.

And although Bateman is expecting a difficult test, he believes his side will secure cup glory if they play to their best – and feels their cause will be aided by a slick, fast passing surface.

“It will be nice to play at the Madjeski,” he said. “It will really suit us to play at the ground as we like to get it down and pass it.

“We’ve been lucky at home this season as our pitch has been excellent but it can be tricky when playing away as some of the surfaces we have played on this season have been poor.

“The pitch will be in top condition and you’d expect it to be wide and long which will help us. Only four or five of the lads playing have played there before so it’ll be a good experience for everyone.” If Wokingham can secure the trophy it will be the fourth time in five years they will have lifted the Reading Senior Cup and the perfect start to the club’s end-of-season trip to Spain on Friday morning.

Sumas have beaten Finchampstead in both meetings this season – winning 4-1 at Lowther Road and 3-2 at the Memorial Ground – and Bateman is hoping their extra quality will show on the day.

“It’ll be a typical local derby,” added Bateman. “Both games have been tough encounters this season, but our little bit of extra quality has shown.

“They’ve lost in the semi-final for the last two years so we’ll have that extra bit of experience of winning it.

“They’ll be well up for it though, and we need to work hard and make sure we match their commitment and effort. If we do then I think we’ll win.”
