Wokingham & Emmbrook head to the Madejski Stadium next week looking to retain the cup for a third season running after winning 2-1 in the semi-final against Bracknell Town on Tuesday evening.

Goals from George Dance and Jake Taylor set up the final against Finchampstead and put the Sumas within touching distance of a third successive Reading Senior Cup victory.

Bateman was assistant manager for the last two successes and admits it’ll feel more special this time round as number one.

“I was more nervous today than I’ve ever been before,” admitted a delighted Bateman. “I didn’t sleep much last night, I barely ate today and I wasn’t much use in work.

“I was assistant to Roger [Herridge] and it was great to win it but this one will be different.

“I had more nerves than usual today but it’s different when it’s your name above the door.” It has been a brilliant season for the Sumas, with a top three finish secured in the Hellenic Division One East and the possibility of finishing second if AFC Hinksey fail to beat Chalfont Wasps on Friday.

“It’s beyond our wildest dreams after the start of the season,” added Bateman. “Unbeaten at home all season in the league and a cup final as well, it’ll be the icing on the cake to win it.” It was a tight, scrappy affair at Larges Lane between two sides not willing to give an inch to their local rivals in front of 273 spectators that attended the derby clash.

Both defences were on top in the early stages but Bracknell drew first blood in the 28th minute when Shane Cooper-Clark headed into an unguarded net after Sam Whiting’s drilled effort had been parried.

But the Sumas fought back and levelled before the break as Jack Gibbs’ inswinging free-kick was headed home by Dance just minutes before the break.

Chances were at a premium after the interval as both sides battled for possession in the middle of the park as the rain fell down.

Bracknell pushed on looking for a winner but could only create a couple of long-range efforts against a solid Wokingham rearguard.

And the Sumas took their opportunity when it came to them with just 13 minutes remaining on the clock.

Julian Harley – who was due to come off the next time the ball left the pitch – embarked on one last solo run and saw his shot saved by Dan Smith in the Bracknell goal before Taylor fired home his 20th goal of the season to put Wokingham within touching distance of the Madejski Stadium.

Bracknell threw men forward late on in a bid to rescue the game but the Sumas held on to the delight of their travelling fans.
