It was the Sumas’ biggest win of the season, in front of a crowd of 80 that turned out at Lowther Road on a sunny afternoon.

Just 50 seconds were on the clock when the Sumas took the lead as Luke Scope was sent clear and finished calmly to put Wokingham in control.

The hosts never looked back as Dan Collier’s effort was deflected in after half an hour to double the lead before half-time.

With the pressure off, the Sumas turned on the style in the second-half and made it 3-0 just minutes after the restart when James Charlton was hauled down in the box and Jake Butler dispatched the resulting penalty.

George Dance scored the fourth from just outside the box in the 71st minute before Scope grabbed his second after again being released one-on-one.

Sam Bateman completed the rout in the 80th minute to give the Sumas victory and secure their top three finish.

Wokingham then ended their league campaign on Monday evening with a 1-1 draw against Maidenhead United reserves.

The game, played at Henley Town FC, took a while to get going with limited chances in the opening exchanges, but it burst into life on the half-hour mark with two goals in three minutes.

It was the visitors who took the lead as Taylor’s shot was parried and Bateman stabbed home the rebound to put the Sumas on course for victory.

But Maidenhead responded and levelled almost instantly. A neat team move saw Emmanuel Olorumfemi pick the ball up in the box and fire home.

The Sumas had chances to win it throughout the second-half with Dance, Bateman and Elliot Rushforth going close, but they could not find a winner and had to settle for a point.

Wokingham joint-boss Dan Bateman, left, said: “I thought it was a great point. It was a really tough game, it was end to end. They put us under pressure at times but the most clear cut opportunities in the game were ours.

“I felt there was one ball that we didn’t deal with and that’s where their goal came from but it was a great strike, and the lads put in a great shift.” He added: “It just shows how good this squad is. I had seven players out who would all be pushing for a start in the side.

“Young Liam Pietrasik came in after not playing for three months and was excellent. All in all I thought it was a really good performance, considering how many we were missing, it was a great shift.” Wokingham currently sit in second-place in league but AFC Hinksey have two games in hand and need just three points to overtake the Sumas and push them down to third.

Next up for Wokingham is a trip to Larges Lane on Tuesday (7.45pm ko) for their Reading Senior Cup semi final against Bracknell Town.
