BRACKNELL Town FC joint boss Steve Nebbett believes moving to a new stadium will restore the club to its former glory.

Last week Bracknell Forest Council took the controversial decision to remove a covenant preventing land at Blue Mountain Golf Club from being developed.

The site has now been earmarked for up to 400 houses, schools, community buildings and a football stadium.

If the scheme goes ahead, the Robins would be forced out of the town to Binfield, which already boasts a Hellenic Premier club.

However, Nebbett, below, insists relocating from Larges Lane would only be good for the future of Bracknell Town following a number of years of hardship.

Speaking exclusively to the News, he said: “The way I see it, it will be brilliant for the club. It could be the boost we need to get us back to where we belong as a Southern League club.

“At the moment we don’t have much money. We’re just about keeping our heads above water, but it’s a struggle.

“Something like this could really help us plan ahead for the future.

“We are surrounded by a lot of clubs like Binfield and Ascot so competition is always going to be tough.

“But a new stadium would be great news for Bracknell Town.” Opponents to the move believe the Robins, originally formed in 1896, belong in Bracknell itself.

However, others argue a new state-of-the-art facility would safeguard the club’s future.

“Look, this is a long way off and I would imagine they will have to finish building the houses before they even consider a football ground,” Nebbett pointed out.

“But a new stadium could become an important facility for the community and should help us attract new members and new sponsors.

“That, in turn, should help to bring in more players which can only be good for the future of the club.

“We’ve got people talking about Bracknell Town again and this would only improve things further “With the right people running the club we could really push on.” Bracknell were without a fixture last weekend but return to Hellenic Premier action this Saturday with a trip to Thame United (3pm ko).

Robins were beaten 4-0 at Larges Lane in the corresponding fixture in October and Nebbett will be looking for a positive reaction from his players, with Sam Whiting poised to start for the first time since rejoining the club from Marlow.

“They battered us at our place,” confessed Nebbett. “It was one of our worst performances since I’ve been Bracknell manager.

“I was appalled at the time and we definitely owe them one. We’re a much better side now.”
