Just avoiding relegation a success for Sumas - Herridge

MANAGER Roger Herridge hopes Wokingham & Emmbrook can build on their recent performances and cement a top-six spot in the Hellenic Premier Division.
Sumas followed up their impressive 1-0 win at title-chasing Wantage Town with an equally as memorable 3-3 draw against leaders Marlow last Saturday.
The four-point haul, along with Witney Town folding due to financial troubles, has lifted them to sixth in the league, two points above their hosts this Saturday, Thame United (3pm ko).
Thame themselves are on a decent run of form having lost just once since late November, and Herridge is expecting a tough test for his side.
"They are flying in the league at will be hard, but our last few results have shown what we can achieve," he told the News.
"Between now and the end of the season we will hopefully be able to put out full strength squads and finish where we want to be, in the top six.
"With the resources we have, anything above relegation is a success, but we have some really good players. Some of the lads in our squad would grace any of the top teams in the league and could play at levels above."
One of the major problems for Herridge this season is that he has rarely been able to name a full-strength squad.
So ravaged have Sumas been by injuries at times that the manager has even been forced to name himself on the substitute bench.
But Herridge says it is a tribute to the players that have been available that they have continued to compete towards the top half of the division.
"I don't want to harp on about it but to get the results we have, with young and inexperienced players at times - no disrespect to them - is a huge credit to the lads," he commented.
"The fact we got results when our squad wasn't anywhere near the strongest shows just how good it is."
* THE funeral of ex-Wokingham & Emmbrook youth team manager Les Hulse will be held on Tuesday, February 26 at St Catherine's Church in Wokingham from midday.
Hulse passed away last week following a long illness.
