Pat Selby's goal 20 minutes from time sealed Finchampstead's first league win since October over Didcot Town Reserves
FINCHAMPSTEAD finally secured their first league win since October with a 2-0 success at Didcot Town Reserves last weekend.
And relieved manager Neil White admitted he had almost forgotten what that winning feeling felt like.
Second half strikes from Junior Arquimbau and Pat Selby were enough to give Finch three points for the first time since the 4-0 victory at Prestwood - who have since resigned from the Hellenic League - back on October 17.
The villagers have endured a miserable three months, with a run of five games without a win in all competitions prior to the big freeze.
And they were denied a victorious return to action on January 23 when Farnborough Reserves grabbed a stoppage time equaliser to snatch a 2-2 draw.
And White admitted that succession of setbacks made Saturday's victory taste all the sweeter.
He said: "It's certainly been a while - I've almost forgotten what it feels like.
"We could have scored a few more as well, but in the end 2-0 was enough to get the three points and that is all we were looking for from the game.
"It was enough for us to jump a couple of places in the table, and it is so tight in that middle section that any win makes such a difference to your position."
White admits he hopes to see his side build on that immediately when they host Rayners Lane at Memorial Park this weekend.
The West London outfit crusied to a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in August, but have slipped to three straight defeats in their only games so far in 2010.
And White said: "We lost 3-0 to them earlier in the season, but we really struggled to get everyone there for a 6.30pm kick-off so there were some extenuating circumstances.
"They have lost to a couple of decent sides recently and my players proved a bit harder to beat than they have been last weekend.
"I would hope that if we played to our potential we would be able to get another win under our belts."
White's men dominated last weekend's clash against their lowly hosts and had plenty of opportunities to run out more comfortable winners.
With Perry Howard running late because of problems with his kit, the visitors were forced to start the game with 10 men, with midfield schemer Bobby Hogg between the posts.
There was a tight opening to the game, but once Finch were back to full strength they started to take control.
However, Arquimbau was denied by the post, and Selby and Ben Knight squandered other good openings as the sides went into half-time without breaking the deadlock.
But the visitors did not have to wait long to open the scoring, the impressive Arquimbau finally grabbing his first goal for the first team 10 minutes after the break.
Finch pushed on for the second, and it finally arrived with 20 minutes to play as Selby raced onto Arquimbau's through ball to slot home and secure the points.
Finch maintained their advantage comfortably after that - with Hogg missing a good chance to make it three - and White admitted the clean sheet was arguably the most pleasing aspect of his side's display.
He explained: "I have always based us on being hard to beat and we got that back to our game this week. One of their forwards has played for the first team a few times but we did a really good job to keep him out.
"I thought Scott Bursill was fantastic, especially as he was playing with a bit of a knock.
"He went to Binfield earlier in the season but it didn't work out and we're delighted to have him back.
"But he made some great challenges and said afterwards that he had not enjoyed a game so much for a long time, which hopefully shows we can get the best out of him."
