EMERGENCY goalkeeper Terry Davies put in a man-of-the-match winning debut as AFC Ascot made it two wins out of the three in the East Berkshire League on Saturday.

Midfielder Davies took over between the sticks after regular keeper Andrew Stringer dislocated a finger. And his first action was to save a first half penalty before his side romped to a 4-1 win over The Mitre.

Ascot started brightly and took the lead when Matthew Panton latched on to an Aaron Wawman through ball before lashing the ball home off both posts.

And the same combination nearly led to a second a few minutes later, but Wawman's shot cannoned off the crossbar.

Mitre then weathered the early storm and drew level through Mark Derby, before a moment of real drama.

The referee pointed to the spot after Ross Tarrant was adjudged to have impeeded a Mitre attacker and in the process goalkeeper Stringer dislocated his finger as he tried to deal with the ball into the box.

This led to a delay and a reshuffle as Jon Gant came on for AFC in the midfield, with Davies donning the goalkeeping gloves.

It proved worth waiting for, though, as Davies pulled off a fine save from the spot kick, to keep his side in the game.

And this proved the springboard needed for AFC to go on and win the game in the second half.

Wawman headed home to give AFC the lead before an own goal from a Mike Cooper cross put them 3-1 to the good. Tempers flared in the second half, which saw a rash of bookings.

And after Mitre had been reduced to 10 men, Jonathon Manuel wrapped up the win from the spot.

AFC ASCOT: Stringer (Gant 35), Crompton, Tarrant, Aira, Geldsetzer, Manuel, Cooper, Davies, Dearnaley, Wawman, Panton.
