Ascot United’s hopes of moving further away from the relegation zone suffered a set-back with a 1-0 defeat at Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday.

The Yellamen remain 15th in the Hellenic Premier table, four points better off than fourth-from-bottom Lydney having played four more games. And they still have to play the Gloucestershire side twice.

Having played only twice since the end of January, they looked rusty and managed to create only one scoring chance in the first half, with Samir Regragui, above, off target with a header from Louis Bouwer’s free kick after 31 minutes.

The hosts also struggled in front of goal, but took the lead in stoppage time when player-manager Sam Collier hooked a left-footed effort over his own shoulder into the top left-hand corner.

Early in the second half, Ascot had a let-off when the unmarked Gio Wrona wasted a golden opportunity, while Richard Saunders should have done better with a volley.

But Ascot then started to enjoy a good spell and Barry Dunbar shot into the side-netting and also brought out a fine from Ian Gill.

At the other end, Ascot keeper Lee Allen produced the best save of the match, diving low to push out a fierce drive from Callum Wright.

Substitute Phil Da Silva’s introduction brought with it a new threat for Ascot, earning a free-kick that Regragui fired over before seeing a shot from a tight angle well saved by Gill.

Neil Richards men take on Lydney at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday (3pm ko) before visiting Brackley Town Saints on Monday (3pm ko).

Wokingham & Emmbrook, another side to have seen little action of late, had last Saturday’s home Division 1 East fixture with Holyport postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. They will be hoping for better luck this Saturday when AFC Aldermaston are the visitors to Lowther Road.

Sandhurst are also looking to return to action this Saturday when they host Milton United at Bottom Meadow and on Monday they visit title challengers Penn & Tylers Green at French School Meadows (both 3pm).

It was a good week for Eversley & California in the Combined Counties League Division 1, following up their 2-1 home win over Frimley Green by defeating Kensington Borough 3-2 away on Saturday for their fourth successive victory.

Brad Brown and Joe Pantony were on target last Tuesday, while Gil De Sousa (2) and Mo Davies netted at Hatton Road, where they played with 10 men for much of the game following an early red card for keeper Billy Wilson.

The Boars, who are up to eighth in the table, host FC Deportivo Galicia in the semi-finals of the Division 1 Cup on Saturday.
