Binfield scored three times in the last 15 minutes to become the first home side to defeat Highworth in the Hellenic League this season.

The leaders arrived at Hill Farm Lane with a highly impressive away record of 15 wins and a draw from 16 games and looked set to extend their run when they eased into a two-goal lead inside the opening quarter of an hour.

However, the mighty Moles dug themselves out of a deep hole to record a 3-2 victory as they followed up their 1-1 draw at Highworth earlier in the season, when they missed a late sitter to snatch all three points.

With that scare in mind, the Wiltshire side knew they faced no easy game on Saturday and right from the start made their intentions clear.

After just seven minutes they took the lead when Joe Williamson's cross from the left was turned his own net at the far post by the unfortunate Will Shaw with a Highworth player breathing down his neck.

Binfield's defence were looking shaky and they were caught out of position when Aaron Ferris raced clear before thumping a rising shot into the top-right corner for Highworth's second goal and it was looking bleak for the Moles.

But then they started to show signs that maybe it wasn't going to be a walkover after all.

Sean Moore, who had scored twice in the 3-1 win over Flackwell Heath in the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup semi-final last Tuesday, got in his side's first effort at goal and then saw his header from James Knight's cross brilliantly saved by Garry Aulsberry.

The former Binfield stopper then pulled off an even better one-handed save to keep out Ian Davies' close-range header.

Five minutes before half-time the hosts lost Chris Gerrard through injury and was replaced by Carlos Santoro. And the young wide player went on to play a prominent part in his side's spirited recovery.

They were looking more secure in defence and starting to apply pressure on Highworth with Moore and Davies creating plenty of problems.

With a little over 15 minutes remaining, they were looking for the breakthrough – but then it came.

Davies was upended in the area and the striker picked himself up to send Aulsberry the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Soon afterwards, Davies rounded the keeper, only to see his cross scrambled away and then defender Liam Gavin sent a header just over the bar.

However, Moore made no mistake on 80 minutes to bring the scores level and the Moles, calling upon all their reserve of energy, had their visitors rattled.

Six minutes later, they bagged the winner. Aulsberry failed to cut out a right-wing cross and the ball fell to Santoro, who buried it into the back of the net.

And Binfield nearly added another late goal, with Davies' lob from more than 40 yards hitting the underside of the crossbar.

They are without a game this weekend, returning to league action at Brackley Town Saints a week on Saturday, April 7.
