ROGER Herridge this week guided Binfield FC to yet another cup final – but his chances of earning a winner’s medal don’t appear to be too high, writes Dave Wright.

His Moles defeated Hellenic League rivals Flackwell Heath 3-1 at Hill Farm Lane on Tuesday in the semi-finals of the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup.

“This is our sixth cup final in my time in charge here,” said Herridge.

“But we have still to win one, so hopefully this will be our year. The club deserves to win a trophy,”

Local rivals Bracknell, who defeated the Moles in two finals last season, play Thatcham or Brimscombe & Thrupp in the other semi-final.

“I don’t mind who we play, but it’s going to be a big ask,” added Herridge.

“What I do know, we will have to be play better than we did tonight if we are going to break our duck. We have got to find a way to win one.”

The Moles boss admitted that the first 20 minutes of Tuesday’s tie “wasn’t good viewing”, adding: “They (Flackwell) were half a yard quicker than us in speed and thought. The goal we gave away was woeful.”

Binfield fell behind in the 21st minute to a scrambled goal by Jordan Dowdican, but then rocked Marcus Richardson’s men with two cracking shots from Jeff Brown and Sean Moore in the 36th and 38th minutes.

Brown then set up another goal for Moore just after the hour mark.

“Sean has the ability to one of the best players in the league, but needs to get himself fitter,” added Herridge, who took his striker off five minutes later.

“More often than not even when we are playing poorly we have just found a way of winning. Look at many times we have scored three goals this year. We are obviously very good going forward and got that bit of quality. That is why we are sixth in the league.”

Binfield, who beaten 3-2 at home by Brimscombe & Thrupp last weekend, face league leaders Highworth at home this Saturday, before hosting another of the title chasers, Bracknell Town, on Monday (7.45pm ko).

The Robins followed up their 4-0 hiding of Longlevens by beating Division 1 East side Virginia Water 1-0 at Windsor’s Stag Meadow on Tuesday in the quarter-finals of the Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Cup.

The only goal came two minutes before half-time when Max Herbert and Jamie McClurg teed up TJ Bohane to score from 10 yards.

Seb Bowerman struck a free-kick against the post, while Joe Grant was ruled offside after heading home Bowerman’s cross just before the end.

It was a third successive win without conceding a goal for Town’s new management team of Carl Davies and Geoff Warner, the pair having now been rejoined by former player and assistant manager Steve Nebbett.

The Robins stay in hot pursuit of Highworth and Thatcham in the title race, with Warner commenting: “We’ve got 11 (league) games left and we’ve just got to keep picking up the points, which we are capable of doing.”

Ascot United, whose last league game was on February 24, return to action away to Royal Wootton Bassett this Saturday.

Wokingham & Emmbrook - another side who have been inactive in recent weeks – face Holyport in a Hellenic League Division 1 East fixture at Lowther Road.
