WELL, it all came good in the end, writes Dave Wright.

Binfield went through pre-season using a large number of players, some from last season but a lot more possible new signings, so it was quite understandable that they suffered several defeats, including two last week – 3-0 at Sandhurst on Tuesday and 5-1 to Hungerford 48 hours later.

However, an early indication that manager Roger Herridge may have found a winning blend among his new-look squad came last Saturday when they crushed Knaphill 6-0 at Chobham.

A tidy performance against the Combined Counties League side produced a brace of goals for both Sean Moore and Joss Millar, with Jamie McCarthy and Danny Langford adding one apiece.

Seeing his men turn chances into goals must have come as a big relief to Herridge, as they had struggled to find the net last week, especially at Sandhurst.

“The big disappointment there was that we had a lot of possession but did not make their goalkeeper work, and we conceded three really sloppy goals on the break,” he said. “There were no real positives to come from the game whatsoever.

“But that wasn’t the case on Saturday when we scored six goals – it could have been more – and kept a clean sheet.

“There were also plenty of positives against Hungerford and I don’t think 5-1 was a true reflection of the match.

“Yes, we knew we would get beaten and we would have to do a lot of running around, but I could not have asked for more from the players. It was a good fitness exercise for us.”

Herridge continued: “Hungerford are a very good National League side and you could see the undoubted difference in quality.

“A player at our level would have wanted two or three touches to get in a shot at goal, whereas they did it in one. While we thinking about it, the ball was in the back of the net.”

Despite conceding five, however, there were some promising performances from the Moles defenders, who included Charlie Tuttle, the son of former Football League professional Dave Tuttle who has been released by Oxford United, and Josh Smith, one of several players to emerge from Binfield’s development team.

“For most of the time, we looked solid at the back,” said Herridge.

Luke Hayden netted a deserved consolation goal for Binfield from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, while on target for Hungerford were Stefan Brown (2), Jamal Lawrence, Luke Williams and James Rusby.

Binfield, having started their Hellenic League fixtures at Wantage last night (Tuesday), face Chichester City from the Southern Combination Premier Division at Hill Farm Lane in the FA Cup on Saturday (3pm).
