WOKINGHAM District Schools U11s enjoyed a day to remember as they were crowned champions in the seven-a-side South West Regional Finals of the Danone Nations Cup on Saturday.

Wokingham progressed through to the semi-finals as group winners in which they played Torbay for a place in the final, beating them 1-0 thanks to an excellent driven finish by Scott Morgan.

The final then pitted Wokingham against Basingstoke, representing Hampshire in the competition, but it was Wokingham who again came away 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Zackary Waight.

As a result, Wokingham were crowned the English Schools South West Regional Champions and will represent the area in the National Finals which will take place at either Leicester City’s or Stoke’s training ground in May or June.

Manager Stuart Bevan said: “We are very fortunate to have such talented players in our district – the team this year have truly been a joy to coach and have all been a credit to their schools. A big thank you to our local schools, team parents, sponsors, the chairman and of course our volunteer coaches (Keith Doward, Mark Scurr and Matt Smith) whom without this would not have been possible.”
