ASCOT United moved up to eighth following their 5-2 hammering of Henley at The Triangle Ground.

Although their keeper, Carl Dennison, had to make two fine early saves, the Yellamen were soon swarming all over the home goal, only to be thwarted by home keeper Matt Hill, poor finishing and goal-line clearances.

The pressure eventually paid off in the 32nd minute with a rasping left-footed shot high into the top left-hand corner.

Ascot looked on top, but the Red Kites looked dangerous on the break and Chris Hood, on the wide left, rifled a low shot past Dennison to bring the scores level in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

After Dennison had made another excellent save, United regained the lead 10 minutes into the second half when Theo Jones curled his free-kick from 22 yards into the net before Hill could move.

Midfielder Jones then turned provider, linking up with Ben Knight to provide the chance for Aaron Berry to add his name to the goal-sheet in the 63rd minute.

Four minutes later substitute Louie Gilpin made it 4-1.

Another sub, Pat Gardner, pulled one back for Henley, who earlier this week saw their leading scorer, Nile O’Meally tempted away by a good offer from Thatcham.

Ascot, who have re-signed Dave Hoar from Burnham, regained their four-goal advantage when skipper Jesse Wilson found the net with a low shot from the edge of the area.

Overall, it was a good performance by the Yellamen, who were missing striker Charlie Samuels due to suspension.

“We didn’t start too well, but once we got going we played some decent stuff,” said manager Jeff Lamb.

“We were missing a few [players] and having two drop out today didn’t help.

“But it was good to have Dave Hoar back involved. He was in our FA Vase run a few years ago.

“Hopefully, more signings are on the way,”

Lamb added: “We now need to try to get a momentum going and build a good team ethic. I am sure we will get there eventually.”

Ascot are home to Thatcham on Saturday.
