ADAM Cornell continued his superb start to the season with a first-half hat-trick as Bracknell Town thrashed hosts Oxford City Nomads 4-1 in the Hellenic League Premier Division on Saturday, writes Richard Ashton.

Cornell put the visitors in front just before the half-hour mark, and the in-form hitman doubled the lead three minutes later.

Callum Whitty missed a penalty for Robins shortly after, but it was 3-0 before the break as Carl Withers found Cornell, and the striker completed his treble by lobbing Nomads goalkeeper Christian Lawrence.

Substitute Seth Humphries gave Oxford City a lifeline, but Withers completed the rout after good work from Jahson Downes and Cornell.

Bracknell Town were due to host Highmoor Ibis at Sandhurst Town last night (Tuesday), before travelling to Egham in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday (3pm).

They then return to league action at Thame United next Tuesday (7.45pm).

  • WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook suffered a 2-1 defeat at Didcot Town Reserves in their opening Hellenic League Division One East encounter on Saturday.

Sumas had a couple of early chances but the hosts took the lead on 34 minutes when a through ball by Jack Kitchener gave Charlie Appiah the chance to fine home.

Wokingham started the second-half brightly, however, and after having a shot cleared off the line, they levelled matters in the 49th minute when Ben Findlay slotted home.

But the Railwaymen upped their game and took the lead in the 64th minute when Ross MacDonald’s sweeping cross was well met by Tom Hoskin who headed into the back of the net.

Wokingham piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but they could not break down an obdurate hosts’ defence and Clive McNelly’s first competitive game in charge ended in defeat.

Sumas enjoyed more success last Wednesday, when they completed their pre-season campaign with a 3-2 victory against Binfield to win the Martin Joyce Trophy.

Wokingham led 3-1 at the break thanks to Craig Haylett, Jake Wheeler and skipper Will Day, with Sean Moore getting the hosts’ reply.

And despite Tom Williams netting for Binfield in the second half, they could not find an equaliser.

Wokingham & Emmbrook travel to Chinnor this Saturday (3pm).

They then host Fareham Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup next Tuesday (7.30pm).
