WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook Rangers Under 14s are celebrating after winning the Slough & Windsor Open Challenge Trophy.

The young Sumas defeated Burnham Junior Tigers Whites 1-0 in a tense final to secure the silverware.

The final was always going to be a tight affair as Wokingham had finished runners up in Thames Valley Football Development League Division One, and Burnham had come second in the North East Hands Sunday premier League.

There was little between the sides in the early exhanges and both defences were on top during a goalless first half.

A difficult playing surface also meant clear-cut chances were few and far between for both sides.

However, Wokingham always looked the more dangerous side on the counter attack with their pace and slick passing.

As the match wore on, it seemed one goal was always going to win it, and it eventually arrived in the latter stages.

The architect of the goal was Marcus De Souza, whose precise pass split the Burnham defence and found Harry Clarke.

Clarke still had plenty to do, but he kept his composure and rifled a thunderous volley from 18 yards into to the top corner as Sumas finally broke the deadlock.

Burnham attempted to force an equaliser, but Wokingham held firm to thanks to a superb display from Rangers’ man-of-the-match, Kyle Moorcroft, in midfield.

As the final whistle sounded, the celebrations began before Wokingham skipper Josh Harris lifted the trophy.
