JEAN-CLAUDE Etienne came off the bench to end Wokingham & Emmbrook’s long run of glory in the Reading Senior Cup, writes Dave Wright.

The Sumas had held the trophy for four years, but in a repeat of last year’s final they lost 2-1 at Binfield in their quarter-final tie at Hill Farm Lane on Monday.

Binfield will meet Highmoor Ibis in the semi-finals at Scours Lane on Saturday, April 30 – the first time Marcus Richardson’s men have played at their new home previously occupied by Reading Town.

The Moles left it late against the holders, as there were just two minutes remaining when Etienne grabbed the winner.

Last Saturday the super-sub scored twice in the 4-2 league win over Longlevens.

“He hasn’t been with us long and has been thrown into a lot of games in a short space of time,” said manager Roger Herridge, who was the Wokingham manager when they won the cup in 2012 and 2013.

“JC is a strong lad and works really hard.”

Herridge was also full of praise of centre-back Lewis Leonetti after Monday’s game, adding: “He was outstanding. You could see he really wanted to win tonight.”

But the Moles manager admitted his side were not at their best against their local rivals.

“We have played so many games in recent weeks and some players looked physically and mentally tired,” he said.

The same could apply to Wokingham and hesitancy in defence led to Liam Ferdinand giving Binfield the lead after 24 minutes.

The home defence struggled to deal with the pace of Luke Scope early on, but keeper Nathan Silver and then Alex Luis denied the Sumas striker.

Silver also thwarted Elliott Rushforth before the visitors equalised in the 43rd minute through Scope, who lashed home a low shot just inside the right-hand post.

With 25 minutes remaining, Etienne replaced Brad Brown and it was he who crashed home the late winner.

Binfield sealed eighth place in the Hellenic League Premier Division following their 4-2 win over Longlevens with Ferdinand and Brown joining Etienne on the scoresheet. Moles had lost 1-0 at Ardley last Thursday.

Rock bottom Wokingham & Emmbrook ended their league campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Lydney Town on Saturday.
