ASCOT United ended their Hellenic Premier campaign with a 1-0 home win over local rivals Binfield on Monday night.

Binfield had won the previous two encounters between the sides this season, but it was the Yellamen who were victorious at the Racecourse Ground on this occasion.

Ascot started brightly with Yinka Salami and Steve Deverall prominent, while Alex Rodrigues was denied by Moles keeper Nathan Silver before Louis Gilpin nodded over from a free-kick.

Binfield, though, wasted an excellent chance to score first when Liam Ferdinand found himself clean through only for Chris Grace to smother his shot.

Back came Ascot as Jamie West’s effort missed the target, Brad Brown headed narrowly wide from Josh Howell’s centre and youngster Thomas Hedges saw a shot bravely blocked by an opposition player.

Binfield improved after the break and only a fine save by Chris Grace prevented Ferdinand from breaking the deadlock on the hour mark.

Moles substitute Ian Brooks then volleyed narrowly over from Deverall’s free-kick as Ascot were forced to defend for their lives.

Rodrigues made a crucial block to deny Ferdinand and the same Ascot player saved another certain goal from a 71st minute corner.

But Binfield’s failure to find the net came back to haunt them when Ascot grabbed the winner two minutes from time.

Adam Cashin-Murray immediately won a corner after replacing Gilpin and when Tom Parsons’ delivery was knocked down by Tom McGarry, Boon was well placed to sweep the ball past Silver to secure all three points for the Yellamen.

The win, which avenged a 4-0 defeat to Binfield less than a fortnight earlier, means Ascot have secured fourth place in the Hellenic Premier table.

They went into Monday night’s clash on the back of a convincing 4-1 home victory against Brackley Town Saints on Saturday.

David Pitt was the start of the show with an impressive hat-trick on his return from World Cup duty with St.Vincent and the Grenadines against Trinidad & Tobago.

Brackley, who had lost just once in seven matches before the weekend, fell behind in the 10th minute when Pitt fired past Dan Farrell following a strong solo run.

James Goodey and Joe Grant threatened a second but Ascot were dealt an injury blow to Paul Coyne, who was replaced by Cashin-Murray.

To add to their frustrations, Brackley equalised on the half-hour mark when Claudio Dias rifled a shot past Grace.

Yet Ascot soon got their noses back in front when Samir Regragui found Goodey whose cross was smacked onto the crossbar by Lee Grant before Pitt tucked away the rebound.

Grace then made a string of saves to deny Brackley a second before Yellamen made it 3-1 in the 65th minute when Pitt completed his hat-trick with a smart finish from a Grant assist.

Ascot added gloss to the scoreline late on when an own goal by Brackley’s Dan Middleton from Cashin-Murray’s corner made it 4-1.

Yellamen can still land some silverware for the third year in the row when they face Brimscombe & Thrupp in the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup final at Kidlington FC on Thursday, April 21 (7.45pm ko).
