FINCHAMPSTEAD’S poor Hellenic League Division One East run continued as they slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Headington Amateurs.

Jon Laugharne’s men made a bright start as they aimed to end a six-match winless streak, forcing a couple of early saves from Headington goalkeeper Steve Skyrme.

At the other end Yannik Nkwanyuo shot over before Finchampstead’s Danny Blatchford tested Skyrme with a free-kick.

Tom Bryant was forced into a trio of fine saves for the hosts but they began to take control as the half wore on, Freddie Barron clipping the crossbar with one attempt.

Finchampstead took a deserved lead on 40 minutes when Harry Swabey picked out Greg Alexander who finished calmly.

Barron had a chance to double the lead early in the second half but Headington levelled on 52 minutes courtesy of a Tom Payne strike.

The Oxfordshire side controversially went in front 13 minutes later. Bryant conceded a penalty, only to redeem himself with a brilliant save from Payne.

However, the referee ordered it to be retaken and Payne made no mistake second time round.

Blatchford and Alexander had chances for Finch late on but neither could score and Headington held on for the win.

Finchampstead’s trip to Chalfont Wasps on Monday was postponed.

They visit Woodley United on Saturday (3pm) and Penn & Tylers Green on Tuesday (6.30pm).
