JEMEL Johnson continued his hot streak in front of goal with a brace to help Binfield to a 5-2 victory at Royal Wootton Bassett in an entertaining Hellenic League Premier Division encounter on Saturday.

Neither team had really established themselves as the dominant side prior to Binfield’s opener midway through the first half; indeed, the best opportunity in the opening stages fell to Bassett’s Dan Bailey, who was played through on goal by Sam Packer’s clever through ball.

Visiting stopper Nathan Silver was equal to the shot, which Bailey tried to guide inside the near post.

However, the visitors took the lead when Liam Ferdinand hit a superb opener, the striker latching onto Josh Howell’s excellent pass and rounding the keeper. Man of the match Danny Horscroft’s shot from the edge of the box was then too hot to handle to make it 2-0.

Some hope for the hosts was salvaged when Steve Yeardley controlled a Nathan Hawkins set piece in the right hand side of the box and fired low inside the near post on the half hour mark.

However, Johnson scored twice early in the second half, first finishing from the edge of the penalty area after Jack Broome’s brilliant surging run set him up, before Liam Ferdinand’s excellent cross set up Johnson for his second.

After Dan Bailey had given the home side a glimmer of hope – volleying in from 10 yards with the Moles looking for offside – Josh Howell’s late penalty finished it off, when Horscroft was halted by two Bassett defenders.
