FINCHAMPSTEAD were dumped out of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup at the quarter-final stage following a heart-breaking 2-1 extra-time defeat to Letcombe in a dramatic match at Memorial Park, writes Richard Ashton.

The opening stages were cagey as both sides looked to settle, although Finchampstead had an opportunity to take a 20th-minute lead when a back-post header went just wide.

Finch were again denied by a fabulous Danny Joyce save from point-blank range shortly after, but they took a deserved lead on the stroke of half time when Scott Hunter stabbed the ball home from close range.

The second half proved a much more open and end-to-end affair, but it took Letcombe until the 88th minute to snatch a dramatic equaliser.

Tom Stone found Luke Faircloth on the right, and his cross was met by a powerful Sean Webb header to force extra time.

And the visitors took an ultimately winning lead after just two minutes of the first additional period, Richard Claydon’s shot hitting the post before Stone followed up from close-range to put his side in front.

Finchampstead were due to visit Binfield in the Bluefine Sports Challenge Cup last night, before visiting Hellenic League Division One East table-toppers Penn & Tylers Green on Saturday (3pm).

They then travel to Highmoor Ibis in the Reading Senior Cup on Monday (7.45pm).

l BRACKNELL Town's Hellenic League Premier Division trip to Lydney Town was postponed due to the hosts’ Gloucestershire County Cup commitments on Saturday.

The Robins host Binfield at Larges Lane on Friday (7.45pm).

l WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook return to action for the first time since their 2-2 Boxing Day draw at Binfield when they travel to Letcombe in the first round of the Bluefin Sport Supplementary Cup this coming Saturday (3pm).

Dan Bateman (pictured) and Matt Eggleston’s side will be looking for some respite in the cup, with their side still rooted to the foot of the Hellenic League Premier Division table having picked up just nine points in 27 games.
