DIVISION Three title hopefuls Finchampstead Reserves slipped to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to AFC Baughurst in the sole league game to beat the weather on Saturday, writes Richard Ashton.

Premier Division side Cookham Dean crashed out of the Wycombe Senior Cup following a disappointing 2-1 reverse at Aylesbury Dynamos.

The Dean looked a shadow of the side which had gone 11 matches unbeaten prior to their cup exit, although they did start well.

Paul Sharpe forced the Aylesbury goalkeeper into a good save early on, but the hosts responded with a good move when they exposed a lot of space down their left side that ended with a cross and shot that Nick Bovingdon blocked at the near post.

Cookham were exposed once again on the same side of their defence two minutes later when an almost identical move ended with a simple side-foot finish.

The visitors responded and Tom South was denied by another fine save, but they fell further behind when a long ball through the middle allowed the Dynamos striker to lob Bovington from 25 yards.

Cookham huffed and puffed to try and get something back before half time and Sharpe, Webb and South all had good chances before Ryan Henry rounded the keeper and slotted home to make it 2-1 just before the break.

Five minutes after the restart a Christian Heyward free kick into the box was headed goalwards by South, but despite appeals for handball the visitors were denied a penalty.

Two minutes later Heyward sent in a dipping shot from distance but it just cleared the crossbar.

Cookham had more and more possession as the game wore on but it was often the final ball that let them down.

With 20 minutes remaining the introduction of Lee Hawkins as a substitute almost had an immediate effect when his low cross-shot found a gap in the home defence, but no Cookham player could get the vital touch as the ball fizzed across the face of the goal.

Jake Brooks curled a free kick just wide of the upright as the visitors went close again, but Aylesbury still held out.

However, Cookham did have the ball in the net once more when Jamie Handscomb out-jumped a stranded goalkeeper on the edge of the area to leave Sharpe clear to side foot the ball into the goal, but with only one defender on the line the assistant signalled for off side and the goal was chalked off.

Berks County’s Premier Division clash with Highmoor Ibis Reserves was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, with the Swords set to visit Rotherfield United this coming Saturday (2pm).

In Division One, the game between mid-table Winnersh Rangers and Frilsham & Yattendon was also called off, and the same fate occurred in the Division Two game between Ashridge Park and Wargrave at Cantley Park.

The Division Four game between Theale and Harchester Hawks was another one postponed, while the Division Five matches between AFC Baughurst Reserves and Berks County Reserves, and Hurst A and Woodley United B were also cancelled following a week of heavy rain.
