JOSH Helmore is raring to go as Thatcham Town prepare to take on Ascot United in a crucial Hellenic League Premier Division game this Saturday (3pm), writes Dave Wright.

The striker will be looking to continue his good form at The Racecourse Ground – providing, of course, he makes the Kingfishers’ starting line-up.

Helmore scored twice as Thatcham defeated Shortwood United 4-2 at Waterside Park last Saturday in the third round of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup.

“Hopefully the goals will keep on coming, said the former Reading Town striker.

“I am really enjoying myself here. They [Thatcham] are the best team I have played in. We have a very strong squad and that means there is a lot of competition for places.”

The Kingfishers have an abundance of quality strikers and no-one can be guaranteed a place in the team.

But Helmore is hoping he will be in the 11 that kicks-off against Ascot, adding: “I have done well against them in the past and hope to be in the starting line-up.”

Helmore was on target when Thatcham defeated the Yellamen 2-1 at home last September.

Since then, Town have suffered only one league defeat and are currently the Premier Division leaders with 54 points from 22 games.

Ascot are fourth on 50 points, having played three more, so it is a game Jeff Lamb’s men cannot afford to lose.

Helmore said: “It is an important game for both sides. Ascot will be tough opponents, but I think the title race will end up between ourselves and Kidlington.”

Ex-Ascot striker Jon Bennett and former Bracknell hot-shot Shane Cooper-Clark should be available after both were cup tied against Shortwood.
