WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook FC joint manager Dan Bateman was full of praise for his side following their FA Vase exit at Hartley Wintney – but

still admitted the hosts deserved their win, writes Dave Wright.

The Sumas lost 3-1 despite taking an early lead in their first-round tie on Saturday.

It was certainly no disgrace to lose, as Hartley Wintney have won all of their 10 Combined Counties League fixtures and have suffered only one defeat in 21 league and cup games.

Bateman said: “I could not fault my lads for their work rate, effort and determination.

“We played well against a very good side. They put us under a lot of pressure, but we defended really well.

“We started really well and deserved to take the lead, but then we switched off and that cost us their first goal. It was a soft goal to give away and disappointing as we had just scored ourselves.”

He added: “It was a really good cup game with both sides having a lot of chances, but they scored three and we managed just the one.

“The result was disappointing, but, as I said, they (Hartley Wintney) are a very good side and we gave them a good game.”

Their exit from the Vase adds to Wokingham's poor run this season.

The Sumas have lost their last 12 Hellenic League games and are firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premier Division table.

But Bateman has strengthened his squad in recent weeks with the signings of Josh Pearson, Sam Whiting and Jordan Rowland, and remains confident they can haul themselves out of trouble.

He and fellow manager Matt Eggleston continue to have the backing of the club's committee, who gave the pair a vote of confidence last week.

"We are really pleased to still have their backing," said Bateman.

"We are both working hard for the club and that will continue."

Confirming their support for the managers, club president Mark Ashwell commented: “We win together and lose together.”

The Sumas' game with fellow strugglers Abingdon United at The Triangle ground this Saturday marks the halfway stage of their league fixtures.

The second half starts with another home game next Tuesday against Highworth, who are currently fourth in the table, but then Wokingham face five successive away league games.
