BINFIELD slipped to a controversial 2-1 defeat at home to Kidlington as their four-match winning run was ended in the Hellenic League Premier Division on Saturday.

The Moles started brightly and Danny Horscroft and Jemel Johnson both had early chances deflected away from goal in an entertaining opening.

Johnson's pace was causing Kiddie some problems as their big centre halves were repeatedly turned during the opening 45 minutes, but too often the home side lacked the ability to finish potential chances.

The Oxfordshire side showed some signs of attacking intent as well, with wings Lewis Coyle and Tom Castle, and front duo Anaclet Odhiambo and Ryan Brooks, looking a lively threat.

However, Binfield's defence stayed strong and in truth goalkeeper Natahn Silver was barely required to make a save as the sides went into the break at 0-0.

Chances came and went early in the second half before the hosts took a 59th-minute lead. Following a series of corners, centre back Michael Walton unleashed a ferocious drive from 10 yards to beat Sam Warrell at his near post.

Johnson had a goal ruled out for off side two minutes later, but taking the lead seemed to affect Binfield, with Kidlington taking a firm grip on proceedings from then on.

And they levelled matters on 65 minutes, Coyle's shot from the edge of the box taking a deflection to beat the unfortunate Silver.

Josh Howell tested Warrell shortly after but with Binfield struggling to retain the ball as effectively earlier in the game, the vital goal arrived on 75 minutes.

But it came in highly controversial circumstances, Lewis Gabbidon's header from a corner blocked by Alex Luis, and Odhiambo's follow-up brilliantly blocked by a combination of the defender and Silver.

However, after consultation with the linesman, referee Paul Andrews awarded the goal, much to the disappointment of the Binfield players and the majority of the 114-strong crowd.

Carl Withers, who made his 400th league appearance for the Moles, and Horscroft were replaced by Brad Brown and Josh Pearson with 10 minutes left, and the former nearly snatched an equaliser when his shot went narrowly past the left-hand post.

The Moles were further irritated by the officials when a long ball could have set them clear, only for the game to be stopped for an injury.

And although they had one final chance, Johnson's late strike was again ruled out for off side after he had collected Jack Broome's overhead kick.

Binfield will hope to get back to winning ways when they visit Highworth Town on Saturday (3pm), before hosting Bracknell Town in their derby next Monday (7.45pm).
