BINFIELD picked up a fourth consecutive win and climbed to seventh in the Hellenic League Premier Division with a routine 4-0 victory at home to struggling Abingdon United.

Seconds into the match, the Moles had three great chances from their first corner, but couldn't find a shot on target from three attempts.

But with United struggling to get on the ball for any spell, the first goal seemed like it would come before too long.

And it was a very good goal when it came - Jemel Johnson picked up the ball in his own half, passed inside for September Player of the Month James Knight and sprinted on down the right wing to meet Knight's return pass. Getting behind the visitors back four, Johnson drew United keeper Tom Plum off his line and squared to lay a tap in on a plate for Liam Ferdinand.

The same pattern continued, with the Moles on the attack frequently and United only breaking forward occasionally - and when they did, the Moles back four dealt comfortably, with Michael Walton the pick of the Moles backline in another good performance. Midway through the half, United had their best chance of the match, with Nathan Silver making his only save of note, doing well to save and hold onto Jamie Essex' dipping volley from 25 yards.

By half time, the Moles perhaps should have added to their lead from several good chances - with a goal of the season contender denied by a brilliant flying save from Plum, when Josh Howell met Jack Broome's cross with a super volley that was heading for the top corner. Later in the half, Howell was again thwarted, this time by a goal line clearance.

Perhaps the only criticism of the Moles on the day was they hadn't put the result beyond doubt and only led by one as the second half started.

But Lewis Leonetti soon put that right in the 53rd minute, when he beat the offside trap from a corner clearance headed back in, won the ball from Plum and tapped into an empty net, with the visitors searching for a free kick that never came.

Josh Pearson replaced Aaron Rowland and Danny Horscroft replaced the injured Ferdinand either side of the hour mark and both gave the Moles a new threat up front. Pearson twice shot over, before finding his range in the 79th minute, finishing superbly from the edge of the area, with a left foot shot into the far corner that gave Plum no chance, after Johnson rolled the ball back.

And four minutes later, Horscroft got in on the act, heading into the top corner from Josh Howell's cross, for his third goal in as many matches.

Late chances at either end weren't quite converted, with Walton getting back to block from Essex and Horscroft seeing Plum save at his near post.

Binfield host high-flying Kidlington on Saturday (3pm).
