BINFIELD FC defeated Royal Wootton Bassett 2-0 on Monday to secure their first home win of the season, writes Dave Wright.

A Josh Howell penalty and an Aaron Rowland header sealed victory against a visiting side who had two men sent off.

Moles gave a debut to left back Chris Dean following his move from Windsor FC.

In the first half, both sides were guilty of frequently giving the ball away and neither keeper had much to do.

But the game changed just before the half-hour mark when Binfield striker Jemel Johnson was pulled down by George Drewitt on the edge of the area.

As he was the last man, the Bassett centre half was shown the red card. Referee Nick Garside awarded a penalty and Howell made no mistake.

The visitors rarely looked like getting on level terms, especially with Lewis Leonetti putting in an outstanding shift in Binfield’s defence.

Roger Herridge’s men sealed victory on the hour mark. Rowland’s shot was parried by keeper Curtis Meare and the midfielder headed home the rebound.

Bassett became increasingly frustrated and a few choice words heard by assistant referee Steve Anderson saw Dave Richards sent off in stoppage time.

Herridge beamed: “We needed this win. It’s been a tough couple of weeks for us so we’re very relieved to get three points. I don’t think we looked troubled defensively.”

Binfield thought they had picked up a first home win this season on Saturday when they led Brimscombe & Thrupp 1-0 going into the last quarter.

But two goals in the last 19 minutes saw the visitors fight back to claim the points.

Moles named an experienced side for the clash with Dave Woozley restored to the starting line-up and record appearance maker, Carl Withers, a second-half substitute.

Josh Pearson threatened early on for the Moles then Black went close for Brimscombe.

But the home side went in front in the 21st minute thanks to Johnson’s close-range strike.

Brimscombe hit the post before the break, though it took a sensational save after the restart to keep out Woozley’s header and prevent the Moles from doubling their lead.

However, Ollie Pitt equalised for the visitors in the 71st minute and then put his side in front 10 minutes later, with the Moles unable to find an answer in the closing stages.

Binfield, who are not in action this Saturday, host Brackley Town Saints next Monday night (7.45pm).
