LEWIS Leonetti marked his debut for Binfield FC with a late winner in their 2-1 victory over Wokingham & Emmbrook at The Triangle, writes Dave Wright.

The young defender joined the Moles last weekend from Combined Counties League club Windsor FC.

And he sealed a spirited recovery by Binfield after they had gone a goal down to their local rivals.

Leonetti partnered Jordan Polston, son of former Reading FC defender John, at the heart of the defence.

“We are playing with different centre-back partnerships in almost every game,” said manager Roger Herridge following Monday evening’s match.

“Lewis came in and I thought he did well. He got the goal at the end, so I am pleased with him.”

The Binfield defence were given some anxious moments in the first half with Wokingham, finding space down their right flank, driving in some dangerous crosses.

And it was mainly down to the brilliance of keeper Nathan Silver that prevented the Sumas taking the lead which they deserved on their first-half performance.

However, they only needed three minutes of the second half to break the deadlock with the in-form Craig Howlett neatly sweeping the ball home at the near post.

Howlett was playing with increased confidence following his two goals in his side’s 3-0 win at Bracknell last week.

But the Sumas were only ahead for five minutes. They failed to clear a free-kick and Lamin Sankoh forced the ball home from close range.

Boosted by this equaliser, Binfield started to string some good moves together playing down the slope and Liam Ferdinand was only denied by the outstretched leg of keeper Sean Woodward, while substitute Imani Likita went close with a header.

Wokingham, however, also created chances themselves, but could not find a way past Silver.

There were several bookings as the competitive edge in the game grew sharper in a game both sides badly wanted to win.

But it was Binfield who took the three points with five minutes from time when substitute Josh Howell’s inswinging corner from the left was headed home by Leonetti from close range.

“We are not playing as well as we can, but we are still getting results,” said Herridge, who was honest enough to admit that his former club didn’t deserve to lose this Bank Holiday Monday derby watched by a healthy crowd of close to 200.

Sumas manager Dan Bateman added: “Two mistakes from two set pieces cost us.

“We didn’t deserve to lose; it was incredibly harsh on my lads. They could not have given me any more.”
