WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook are still looking for their first Hellenic Premier Division win of the season after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Longlevens AFC on Saturday.

In a battle between the winners of last season's Hellenic Division One East, and West, it was the visitors from the West that took the honours thanks to a solitary goal from Ed Smylle.

Dan Bateman would've been left wondering how his side had failed to take at least a point from the contest after spurning numerous chances throughout the game.

The Sumas started brightly and should've been 1-0 up within five minutes when Elliot Rushforth raced through on goal but he could only find the post after beating the keeper.

Minutes later and Rushforth did have the ball in the net – but Luke Scope was adjudged to have fouled the Longlevens keeper in the build up – which only added to the frustration for the Sumas.

The home side continued to dominate and Jake Butler went close with a long-range effort before James Charlton had to leave the action early with a twisted ankle.

Adam Cooke replaced him and he was only on the pitch a few minutes before watching on as the visitors took the lead against the run of play.

A free-kick was needlessly given away and Sumas failed to clear the lines, with Smylle stabbing home the loose ball.

The goal rocked the hosts and it was the visitors that looked the superior side at the start of the second half, with Sean Woodward twice called into action to thwart dangerous attacks from the visitors.

But as the game wore on, Sumas started to dominate again and Julian Harley saw his deft chip go narrowly wide after being sent through on goal.

He was then involved again as his late header was tipped away on the line as Longlevens held on to grab all three points.

It was a harsh lesson for Bateman's side, who will have learned that they need to take their chances when presented in the top division.

Wokingham were due to play Oxford City Nomads last night (Tuesday) before a home clash with Thame United on Saturday (3pm).
