The match went all the way to penalties after a drab 0-0 affair and the hosts eventually came out on top as they edged past Dan Bateman’s side 7-6 on penalties.

The Sumas boss would have been disappointed with defeat but will console himself with the fact that Wokingham look well-placed to win the Hellenic League Division One East title after picking up another three points at their temporary home of Henley Town against Finchampstead on Thursday evening.

Wokingham ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in the derby to take a further step towards the championship and get one over on their rivals.

The Sumas now sit two points clear at the top of the table, with three games in hand on their nearest rivals with just six matches remaining.

It would have to be a massive swing for Bateman’s men to not take the title but their performance showed all the signs of a side that were destined to be champions.

Elliot Rushforth and Luke Scope had already gone close to opening the scoring before the former made amends to put his side on track as he gave Wokingham a well-deserved 24th-minute lead.

Eight minutes later and it was 2-0 as James Charlton swept home a corner from the left to double the Sumas’ advantage.

In an end-to-end finish to the half, Finches came close to reducing the arrears, but Sean Woodward made a fantastic save from Scott Hunter’s effort.

And Wokingham made the most of the reprieve as Nick Bateman added a third on the stroke of half-time to all but seal the three points for the visitors.

Finchampstead were much improved in the second half and their defence restricted Wokingham to a couple of half chances as both sides failed to find the net in a quiet second period.

Wokingham & Emmbrook visit Stokenchurch in the Reading Senior Cup quarter finals on Saturday (2pm) before hosting Easington Sports in the league on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Finch travel to Henley Town (3pm) on Saturday hoping for a better result than they achieved last Thursday.
