After an even opening 10 minutes, Cheal pushed Lee Boon’s volley away as the Yellamen threatened first, before Saracens’ Nathan Gill wriggled saw a deflected shot spin wide of Chris Grace’s goal.

The Cheltenham stopper was soon alert to Jon Bennett’s cheeky flick from Daryl Mclean’s 20th minute cross with the follow up looping onto the roof of the net, before Rob Saunders’ deflected effort also went over.

Lee Boon and Bennett then linked up with a one-two before the former saw his effort tipped away, although his side pressed the self-destruct button after 32 minutes when Ben Tunnicliffe conceded a needless penalty for holding Markman in the box. Saunders stepped up, and found the bottom right hand corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Cheal’s heroics then kept Ascot at bay - two fantastic saves denied Bennett - while Markman and Mclean were wasteful with decent chances.

The goalkeeper’s man-of-the match display continued with another fine save to deny Mclean after the pacey winger had beaten Rob Ingram and shot from a tight angle, before he then denied Bennett again.

The second half began much as the first had ended - Cheal saving smartly with his feet after Saunders had latched onto Mclean’s pass and shot first-time.

Incredibly, he produced yet another sterling save to deny Bennett’s powerful shot at the near post, while at the other end, Jamie Barnes saw a deflected effort from long range sail wide.

However Saracens’ respite was short-lived as Ascot scored twice in two minutes. Firstly, Boon danced through the defence and cut the ball back for Bennett to double the lead, before Mclean raced forward, cut onto his right and drilled low into the bottom right.

Ascot then added to those 70th and 71st minute efforts with another in the 75th as substitute Joe Grant glanced home Joe Gritt’s inswinging corner.

Saracens recorded their first shot on target - albeit a sliced interception at the wrong end from defender Adam Collins that Cheal brilliantly held to prevent an own-goal.

Another save - this time a double block to deny Grant and Bennett - denied Ascot number five after 85 minutes, but they added their fifth and final goal in the closing stages when another Gritt corner sailed straight over Cheal and into the net.

Ascot visit Oxford City Nomads on Saturday (3pm).
