ROYAL Ascot cricketers will have the chance to play at Lord's if they impress ex-England captain Michael Vaughan in the NatWest locals versus legends game on Bank Holiday Monday.

Ascot are one of only three clubs in the country to win the prestigious T20 match after they rallied support from members, friends and the local community to secure points on the NatWest cricket website.

If playing against former Ashes-winning captain Vaughan isn't enough, three players from Ascot will also be chosen to play in the series finale at Lord's next month.

Vaughan said: "For the decision of who joins me at Lord's, performances on the day obviously play a big part. The man-of-the-match is guaranteed a place but for the other two spots, I'm looking for players who can perform and help me to create a balanced side. But most of all, I'm looking for players who enjoy playing the game as that's the key whatever your level." Ascot were given some handy tips on how to approach the big game by another Ashes-winning skipper in Alastair Cook last week.

Three days after beating the Aussies, Cook dropped in to oversee a training session at Ascot Heath.

He bowled a few balls in the nets, helped run fielding drills for the seniors and Under 15s and held a question and answer session about Ascot's preparations.

Royal Ascot skipper Nick Sweetman said: "It was a bit surreal but a great experience. Alastair Cook's a really down-to-earth bloke, he exceeded all my expectations." As captain for the day, it was quite apt that Sweetman asked the England skipper for advice on how to play against the legends side, which will feature Adam Hollioake, Phil DeFreitas, Alex Tudor, Devon Malcolm, Ed Giddins, Mark Ramprakash, Dean Headley, Mal Loye, Martin Bicknell and Richard Blakey.

"It's the biggest day that we're going to have at the club," said Sweetman, who hopes the charity game will kick-start Ascot's campaign to raise funds for a new pavilion.

Sweetman admits he is feeling nervous but excited about the match.

"We're all looking forward to the day. I'm particularly looking forward to meeting Michael Vaughan. We will try not to get overwhelmed by the occasion." The tickets, which are 10 for adults and 2 for children, are available on the door and from Budgens and Cliff Roe Sports on Ascot High Street as well as Bar One and the Royal Ascot CC clubhouse. Parking and the matchday programmes are free. The event starts at 12.30pm and will include an outdoor bar, hog roast, kids entertainment and cricket coaching.

The main match will begin at 3pm.
