WOKINGHAM CC captain Dan Reddyhough believes his side are good enough to hold on to top spot in Thames Valley Division One - but admits there is still a long way to go.

Reddyhough's men climbed a point above Berkshire rivals Reading at the summit after comfortably seeing off third-placed Amersham on Saturday.

Stevie Smidt (4-54) and Simon Myles (5-21) claimed the majority of the wickets as the Buckinghamshire side were dismissed for 141.

And Stuart Parsons (58) and Rukshan Soza (38*) then led Wokingham to a seven-wicket victory that shot them to the summit of Division One.

"It's very nice to be top and great reward for the hard work we have put in so far," Reddyhough told the News.

"The rest of the league probably didn't expect us to be in contention so early on having just come up, but after winning the league last year there is a lot of confidence at the club and we have played well.

"But we have got to the top and want to stay there, we are all going to try our best to do that, and we are good enough to do it. We know that there is a long way to go though."

With only the top team winning promotion from Division One into the Home Counties League next season, there is fierce competition amongst the clubs in the division.

Reading, Amersham and High Wycombe 2nds are all hot on Wokingham's heels and Reddyhough knows his side cannot afford to slip up.

"There are a number of sides capable of challenging and competing and we still have to play them all. We're top of the league and that's nice but there is still a long way to go, we are all aware of that," he commented.

Up next for Wokingham is a home match against Beaconsfield on Saturday and Oaks' skipper is expecting a tough test.

"We have played Beaconsfield a lot over recent years and they are a good side, they have beaten us quite a few times. We know they will be difficult and we need to be at our best for the match," he concluded.
