THAT’S two trophies on the shelf at the Larges Lane ground and there’s room for one more by the end of the season, writes Dave Wright.

Bracknell Town lifted the Bluefin Sport Hellenic League Cup by defeating Highworth 2-0 at Abingdon United FC to follow up the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy they won two weeks earlier.

The Robins now have their sights on a third – the Reading Invitation Senior Cup – although there is still uncertainty about this competition due to the inquiry into the abandoned semi-final tie between Binfield and Woodcote Stoke Row.

At the moment it’s Wokingham & Emmbrook who stand between them and an appearance at the Madejski Stadium although there is still a chance this semi-final could become the final.

Whoever they meet, Mark Tallentire’s men will start favourites on the evidence of their accomplished performance in dispatching a robust Highworth side.

Both goals came early in the second half from their two leading scorers, Adam Cornell and TJ Bohane.

The Robins were good value for their win, but had to battle hard to overcome their Premier Division rivals in front of a crowd of nearly 300.

It was Highworth who contributed to Bracknell’s failure to win the league title by edging home 2-1 at Larges Lane last month, so revenge was somewhat sweet, even though this latest success cannot totally mask out the bitter disappointment of not being crowned champions and returning to the Southern League.

Bracknell were not at full strength on Monday with skipper Carl Davies and his deputy, Jamie McClurg, both suspended and Johnny Gray on holiday.

But Kensley Maloney returned from injury and, although clearly lacking match fitness, he was to play a vital role in his side’s victory.

The two replacements, Callum Whitty and Kennie Chamberlain, also performed with credit, as they had against Binfield in the Senior Trophy.

Bracknell were quickly into their stride on a pitch looking in particularly good condition at the tail end of the season.

After just five minutes Seb Bowerman put Bohane through and he lobbed the advancing keeper, Kent Kauppinen, only to see the ball drop wide of the near post.

Then Bohane put over a low cross from the left that Cornell just failed to turn into the net from close range.

Shortly afterwards, Cornell looked to have earned a penalty when he was challenged in the area, but appeals for a spot-kick were turned down.

Highworth, however, were making it difficult for Bracknell by not allowing them to dwell on the ball, but they were also conceding many free-kicks and corners, which kept dead-ball specialist Carl Withers particularly busy.

Town had the better chances in the first half but the game was quite evenly balanced and it needed a superb save by Chris Grace to deny the Worthians a 35th-minute lead.

From just outside the area, Ash Edenborough’s free-kick took a deflection to leave Grace wrong-footed, but he managed to turn and palm the ball out. It fell to Ellis McSharry, but he could only fire the ball back to Grace.

Bracknell made a change at half-time with Bowerman, nursing a hamstring injury, giving way to Dan Roberts.

And it took them just two and a half minutes to break the deadlock. Skipper Dave Hancock fed Maloney down the right flank and he cut in before crossing for Cornell to slot home from close range for his 45th goal of the season.

Grace was again called into action following a free-kick before Robins doubled their lead on 55 minutes. Hancock again got his side on the attack and Bohane was left in the clear, having time to pick his spot to slot the ball low past Kauppinen, his 46th goal for Bracknell and his 47th in all.

From then on, the Robins never looked like losing and in doing so they completed a miserable five days for Highworth, who last week had lost 2-1 to Swindon Supermarine in the Wiltshire Senior Cup final.
